The Technical Professions Division is seeking a full-time, ten-month Automotive Lab Assistant.
Position Summary
The Automotive Lab Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the operations of the Automotive Technology programs at Columbia-Greene Community College. This position assists faculty, students, and staff in various technical and administrative tasks related to automotive education and training. The Lab Assistant ensures that the automotive labs and equipment are well-maintained and provides valuable assistance to both instructors and students. The position reports to the Technical Professions Division Chair and the Dean of Academic Affairs and is a full-time, ten-month position.
Key Responsibilities
· Lab Maintenance- Assist in the setup, organization, and maintenance of automotive laboratories and workspaces, perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on automotive equipment and tools, and ensure that safety protocols and regulations are followed in the labs.
- Technical Support and Equipment Maintenance- Assist instructors and students with technical issues related to automotive diagnostic equipment, software, and tools, provide guidance on the proper use of automotive technology resources, assist faculty and students during class instruction (as needed). Schedule and coordinate regular maintenance and calibration of automotive diagnostic tools and equipment. Assist with troubleshooting and arranging repairs when necessary.
- Inventory Management- Monitor and maintain inventory levels of automotive parts, tools, and supplies, assist faculty and division chair in the procurement and organization of automotive equipment and materials.
- Classroom Assistance- Collaborate with faculty leads in preparing instructional materials, presentations, and hands-on demonstrations. Provide technical support during automotive technology classes and workshops.
- Safety Compliance-Promote a culture of safety in the automotive labs and workshops. Conduct safety checks and assist in ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Student Support-Offer guidance and support to students during lab exercises and projects. Assist students in understanding automotive technology concepts and refer them to college support services as needed.
- Documentation-Maintain organized and accurate records of equipment maintenance, inventory, and safety inspections. Prepare reports and documentation as required.
- Collaboration-Collaborate with the automotive technology faculty and staff to improve program effectiveness and outreach. Assist in planning, organizing, and staffing automotive-related events.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Division Chair and/or Dean of Academic Affairs.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry heavy automotive equipment and tools.
- Comfort working in an automotive shop environment, which may include exposure to chemicals, temperature fluctuations and loud noise.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in automotive technology or related field preferred.
- Practical experience in automotive repair and maintenance.
- Familiarity with automotive diagnostic equipment and tools.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and excellent organizational abilities.
- Commitment to safety and following established procedures.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification.
- Previous experience in an educational or training setting.
- Knowledge of automotive technology software and diagnostics and basic computing skills.
Salary and Benefit Information
Contractual starting salary $18.40 per hour and will be commensurate with education and experience.
