Job Description
Job Title: Staff Accountant
Department: Accounting/Finance
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Summary: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The candidate will be a self-motivated individual capable of working independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines, and who works well under pressure. High-level analytical and communication skills are a must.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Prepares financial statements and board reports pertaining to the corporate and mutual holding company activities, including interest rate risk management, and cash management.
2. Prepares and reconciles financial institution balances of investments, accrued interest and borrowings to the general ledger.
3. Participates in the month end closing process which may include journal entries, account reconciliations and balancing of certain accounts.
4. Review invoices for correctness and appropriateness.
5. Prepares corporate and mutual holding company activities, including cash management, journal entries, general ledger, accounts payable and general ledger reconciliation.
6. Assist with the preparation and review of SEC filings, FDIC Call report, NYS Sales Tax reports and other state and federal reports as needed.
7. Communicates with external auditors and regulatory agencies as required, including assisting others with account research and audits as necessary.
8. Assists with the annual budget, profit forecasts, and operational changes as needed.
9. Acts as the back-up for departmental staff’s daily duties as required.
10. Assists CFO with special projects as necessary.
11. Performs other duties as assigned and directed by management.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before the Board of Directors, customers or fellow employees.
Math Ability:
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Sound understanding of basic accounting functions and GAAP.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and internet software.
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Accounting from four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Specialized Training:
Completion of in-house training at the financial institution.
