Motor Equipment Operator

Town of Canton Highway Department

Town of Canton, New York is accepting applications for a full time Motor Equipment Operator (MEO).

MEO performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of moderately complex motor equipment used in highway repair, construction and maintenance projects and other public works activities. Potential for promotion to a Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO).

Candidate will be responsible and proficient in operation and maintenance of small motor equipment and conduct plowing and sanding that is in compliance with town highway operating safety policies. Candidate will be expected to participate in a drug and alcohol testing program. Hourly rate is $24.02/hour.; 40-hour work week; 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. winter months; 6 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. summer months.

Candidate must meet the following qualifications:

A. High school diploma, high school equivalency diploma; or an Individual Education Plan Certificate;
B. Knowledge of safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a variety of motor equipment;
C. Ability to read and understand assigned equipment operations and servicing information;
D. Possess mechanical aptitude;
E. Willingness to respond to emergencies/work under adverse weather conditions;
F. Dependability, good inter-personal skills, exhibit integrity and sound judgement; strong work ethic;
G. Physical condition commensurate with demands of light-to-heavy physical labor;
H. Possession of valid NYS Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) License number and date of issue must be on the application.
I. Expectation of getting a NYS Class A CDL.
J. Possess Valid Driver’s license with no points
K. Experience desired in operation of highway construction / maintenance of equipment.
